A. Cuenca, C\u00e1ceres, Gij\u00f3n, Granada, Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda and Arcos de la Frontera, as well as Tomelloso.<\/p>\n

Q. Why are you a painter?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. To tell you the truth, by chance; there is no precedent in my family, I worked in trades that had nothing to do with painting, and I have no academic training in Fine Arts. I couldn\u2019t really explain it; I only know that I have a gift for drawing and at one point I felt an irresistible urge to throw myself fully into this fascinating world.<\/p>\n

Q. Can a painter live without painting?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. I personally couldn\u2019t; it would be an ordeal as well as meaningless.<\/p>\n

Q. Which masters of painting do you admire most?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. Many\u2026, but there are always some for whom you feel a certain preference: Vermeer, Fortuny, Pinazo, Antonio L\u00f3pez Torres, Francis Bacon\u2026; the list would be long.<\/p>\n

Q. And who has influenced you most?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. The Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, and Spanish painting of the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly the Vallecas School, D\u00edaz Caneja, etc.<\/p>\n

Q. What is painting to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. A vehicle. A vehicle for expressing and conveying the emotions I feel about everything that happens around me: feelings about myself, experiences, memories, joy, sadness\u2026<\/p>\n

Q. And Art?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. The aesthetic expression that transcends time. Only time builds ART with capital letters.<\/p>\n

Q. What would you highlight from your biography?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. I\u2019m not the best person to answer that; if anything, my effort and my eagerness to devote my life to this without having academic training.<\/p>\n

Q. What journeys have you made? How and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. For me it is essential to travel, to live in different settings, to leave the studio and \u201csubject\u201d the palette to different kinds of light\u2026 I have travelled precisely in order to paint, to places as different as Morocco, Portugal, Paris, Brussels, C\u00e1diz, Cuenca, Asturias, Extremadura, Galicia and C\u00f3rdoba.<\/p>\n

Q. Is painting over? Have young people stopped painting? Where will painting go from here?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. For me painting is a language, a language so rich and universal that I cannot conceive of life without it\u2026<\/p>\n

How could it end!<\/p>\n

As long as there is life, this form of expression will exist. Joys and sorrows, stories\u2026, everything comes from it.<\/p>\n

Where will it go? I don\u2019t know, and I\u2019m not very interested; by then I\u2019ll be dead. What I do hope is that artificial intelligence will not be able to supplant Art.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

Q. Is artistic creation becoming ever more difficult?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. I don\u2019t know; what I do know is that, because of the greatness and spirituality it contains, artistic creation is not, and never will be, an easy task.<\/p>\n

Q. What room is left for creation?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. Everything. Everything the artist is capable of seeing and conveying, so as to \u201cpinch\u201d people\u2019s insides\u2026<\/p>\n

Q. And what challenges does a painter face today?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. The same as always. It is not at all easy to live solely from painting, nor to create a coherent body of work that endures, or to have your own recognisable style\u2026<\/p>\n

Q. What would you like your epitaph to be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. \u201cMy craft made me aware of the enormous value of time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI invested my life in what I loved most.\u201d<\/p>\n

Either would do.<\/p>\n

Q. Which Spanish painters have made history?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. Rather than naming individuals, I prefer to speak of periods and movements, but without doubt Vel\u00e1zquez and Goya; the Spanish 19th century, 20th-century realist painting, the El Paso group, etc.<\/p>\n

Q. What is the difference between painting from life and painting in the studio?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. Painting from life\u2026, whether landscape or in the studio, is really the same thing. In the studio you can set up a series of elements or ideas in front of the easel and, by putting them into the painting, you are really painting from life, just as if you went out into the countryside or the street. In the second setting, however, the walls have disappeared: you can hear the birds singing, smell the thyme and rosemary, let yourself be embraced by the fog, walk on damp earth, observe the lichen on the stones, the murmur of people\u2026 or the noise if you paint in the street.<\/p>\n

For me it is absolutely essential to leave the studio from time to time.<\/p>\n

Q. And do you do so often?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. About twice a year.<\/p>\n

Q. How do you spend your time when you are not painting?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. With my family, travelling, seeing exhibitions, looking through art books\u2026 and sometimes\u2026 doing absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n

Q. Criticise gallery owners: what do you ask of us? What do we do wrong? What do you miss?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. It\u2019s not for me to criticise gallery owners; they have their mission just as I have mine. Nor is it for me to say what they do wrong. A gallery owner must be intuitive and, when they back an artist, they should do so without conditions or selfishness.<\/p>\n

Q. How can collecting be encouraged?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. That is a complex subject. A love of art should be instilled at school\u2026, from an early age, so that this kind of \u201cflame\u201d would in the future spark the curiosity, interest and enthusiasm that end up being the \u201cengines\u201d of an art collector.<\/p>\n

Q. Which paintings would make up your \u201cImaginary Museum\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. Many, but I must be brief, so I will mention some especially significant ones:<\/p>\n

– Botticelli\u2019s self-portrait.<\/p>\n

– A work by Caravaggio.<\/p>\n

– A still life by van der Hamen.<\/p>\n

– At least one sculpture by Rodin, Benlliure, Aniceto Marinas, Alberto Giacometti, etc.<\/p>\n

– Vermeer\u2019s Girl with a Red Hat.<\/p>\n

– Vel\u00e1zquez\u2019s The Buffoon Don Sebasti\u00e1n de Morra.<\/p>\n

– Two small panels by Ignacio Pinazo and another two by Joaqu\u00edn Sorolla.<\/p>\n

– A poster by Toulouse-Lautrec.<\/p>\n

– A painting by Gauguin.<\/p>\n

– Van Gogh\u2019s The Potato Eaters.<\/p>\n

– Any work by Mark Rothko.<\/p>\n

– Picasso\u2019s The Old Guitarist.<\/p>\n

– A Francis Bacon.<\/p>\n

– Any sackcloth work by Millares.<\/p>\n

– Of course, something by Basquiat.<\/p>\n

– Grandmother Juana, by L\u00f3pez Torres.<\/p>\n

– A still life by L\u00f3pez Villase\u00f1or.<\/p>\n

– Etc.<\/p>\n

Q. Is the painter an intellectual? Should they be? Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. A painter does not have to be an intellectual; that is what critics are for. What they must know very well is the history of art and all the disciplines of the craft.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

Q. Is there any other question you would have liked me to ask?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A. What I would like, in return, is to ask you: is a taste and interest for art born or made? Does it come from your close relationship with some members of the El Paso group?<\/p>\n

Q. That would take a long time to answer, but I will be very brief.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In my case it was born at the cinema, in the days of the NO-DO newsreels. On that occasion it was a feature on Z\u00f3bel, around the end of the seventies; I must have been eighteen. Abstract art had a bad reputation, but Z\u00f3bel, in the way he spoke, drew and expressed himself\u2026, captivated me so much that he awakened my interest in everything that hides or dispenses with any real visual reference in order to shape a world of inner, spiritual, genuinely human expression, but of a metaphysical nature.<\/strong><\/p>\n

His sensitivity, his depth, his knowledge, his way of speaking, the way he faced the canvas\u2026, left an indelible mark on me. From then on I was always very respectful of modern painting and strove to seize the \u201cbooty\u201d that Manolo Vald\u00e9s says he tries to carry off from every painting he explores and analyses.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is more, the Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca was for me a sacred temple of contemporary Spanish painting, and a great man who worked there, Alfonso Medina, taught me a lesson in humility after an unfortunate comment I made about one of the works on display. The Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca is undoubtedly an international landmark and a must-see.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Later I met Saura; I had five years of close friendship and very intense collaboration with him and learned things that cannot be told. With the gallery, too, I have dealt a great deal with extraordinarily interesting people like you, and with many other impressive artists, some very well known, such as Feito, Canogar, Torner, Farreras and Brinkmann, and others less so, such as Javier Flor\u00e9n, Bonifacio, Adri\u00e1n Moya, Pagola, Miguel \u00c1ngel Moset, Luis Roibal, Zapata, V\u00edctor de la Vega and a very long etcetera that includes you\u2026, and I must tell you that it grieves me deeply how badly Spanish artists are treated in their own land.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thank you for having bared a small part of yourself; I know that painters have, deep down, the soul of a poet.<\/strong><\/p>\n
