Alberto Cavazos

San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León, 1939

Alberto Cavazos is one of the most distinctive Mexican artists of his generation. A painter, draughtsman and sculptor, he has pursued a career of more than six decades marked by constant exploration of the figure, gesture and the expressive possibilities of colour. Trained in the circle of the Plastic Arts Workshop of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, his work stands out for a personal language in which the intensity of drawing, the freedom of the brushstroke and an essentially expressive figuration live side by side.

He has exhibited both in Mexico and in several countries in Europe and the Americas, and his work is held in institutional and private collections. In Spain he also maintained a close relationship with the artistic milieu of Cuenca during the sixties, although his painting always kept its own identity, far from rigid stylistic labels.

Cavazos therefore belongs to that tradition of artists who understand painting as a territory of permanent research, where reality serves as the starting point for a free and deeply personal interpretation.
